Flight Simulator: ATC Sound

Flight Simulator: No Instructor, Pilot, or ATC voices in lesson or adventure Applies to: Microsoft Flight Simulator 98 Standard EditionMicrosoft Flight Simulator 2000 Standard EditionMicrosoft Flight Simulator 2000 Professional Edition More Symptoms When you start a lesson, an adventure, or a flight in Microsoft Flight Simulator, the Instructor, Pilot, or Air Traffic Controller (ATC) voices may not be played. Or, the engine sounds may not be played. Cause This issue occurs if one or more of the following conditions are true:

   An audio codec installed on the computer is missing or damaged.
   The Microsoft Flight Simulator 98 disk or the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000 disk is not inserted in the CD drive.
   The Lessons/Adventures sound option is disabled in the program.
   The ATC option is disabled.
   The sound driver for your sound card is outdated.
   Your sound card does not support the hardware features that are required to play the game.
   You are playing in multiplayer mode.

Resolution To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they appear. If one method does not resolve the issue, go to the next method. Method 1: Enable sound To do this, follow these steps:

   In the cockpit, click Options, point to Settings and then click Sound.
   Select the Lesson/Adventures or Air Traffic Control option. Then, move the lever to the right side to increase the sound level.
   Click the green check mark, or click OK.

Method 2: Delete the configuration (.cfg) file To do this, follow these steps.

Note After you delete the file, the file is re-created when you restart the game.

   Use one of the following procedures, as appropriate for your version of the Windows operating system.

   Windows XP
       Click Start, and then click Run.
       In the Open box, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
       %appdata%\microsoft
   Windows Vista
       Click Start Start button .
       In the Start Search box, type the following command and then press ENTER:
       %appdata%\microsoft
   On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
   In the Folder Options dialog box, click the View tab.
   Click to select the Show hidden files and folders check box.
   Click to clear the Hide protected operating system files check box.
   Click to clear the Hide file name extensions for known file types check box.
   Click OK.
   Locate and then double-click the Flight Simulator folder.

   For example, the folder for Microsoft Flight Simulator X is called "FSX." The folder for Flight Simulator 2004 is called "FS9."
   Right-click the .cfg file, and then click Delete.
   When you are prompted to confirm the file deletion, click
   Yes.
   Restart Flight Simulator.

Method 3: Install the Windows codec for Windows XP To do this, follow these steps.

Note These steps are only for Windows XP.

   Click Start, and then click Run.
   In the Open box, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
   Hdwwiz.cpl
   Click Next.
   Click Yes, I have already connected the hardware, and then click Next.
   In the Installed hardware list, click Add a new hardware device, and then click Next.
   Click Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced), and then click Next.
   In the Common hardware types list, click Sound, video and game controllers, and then click Next.
   Under Manufacturer, click (Standard system devices).
   Click Have Disk.
   In the Install From Disk dialog box, click Browse, and then open the following folder:
   C:\Windows\System32
   Click the Mmdriver.inf file, and then click Open.
   In the Install From Disk dialog box, click OK.
   Click Continue Anyway if you receive the following message:
   The software you are installing has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP
   In the Model list, click the codec that you want to install, such as IMA ADPCM Audio Codec or Microsoft ADPCM Audio Codec, and then click Next.
   Click Next to start to install the codec.
   After the codec is installed successfully, restart the computer.

Method 4: Enable ATC in Flight Simulator To do this, follow these steps:

   Start Flight Simulator.
   Click Create A Flight.
   Select Start Flight with ATC window open.
   Click Fly Now.

Method 5: Reduce Hardware Sound Acceleration in Dxdiag If you run Combat Flight Simulator or Flight Simulator 98 on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, or Microsoft Windows 2000, reduce the Hardware Sound Acceleration setting. To do this, follow these steps:

   Click Start, and then click Run.
   In the Open box, type dxdiag, and then click OK.
   Under DirectX Features on the Sound tab, move the Hardware Sound Acceleration Levelslider all the way to the left. This is the No acceleration setting.
   Click Exit.

If you are playing in multiplayer mode, you will not hear the Air Traffic Control tower. This behavior is by design. To resolve this behavior, verify that the Flight Simulator 98 or Flight Simulator 2000 CD is inserted in the CD drive.

Note If you are running Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002 under a full installation, the CD is not required.
