The World's Most Active Twitter City? You Won't Guess It

Being (somewhat) active on Twitter, and fascinated by the vast amounts of wildly random but often extremely useful information endlessly tweeting across it, I’m always interested in who’s using it.   So when I just happened across a study this evening from earlier this summer analyzing Twitter’s global usage patterns, I gobbled it up like some of those Christmas treats I’ve been eating too many of.   The findings surprised me.  The world’s most active city in terms of posted tweets?   No, it’s not New York, Tokyo or London (though they’re all in the top 5).

It’s Jakarta, Indonesia.   In addition to New York, Tokyo and London, Sao Paulo is in the top 5.  And the number 6 city, just ahead of Paris and Los Angeles, is Bandung, Indonesia.  (For context, Bandung’s population is approximately 2.4 million, and Jakarta’s is a bit over 10 million.)

Not that we need the slightest bit of further evidence of the global nature of social media, but I still felt the study, “Geolocation Analysis of Twitter Accounts and Tweets,”   by the Paris-based research firm Semiocast, contained numerous morsels of #twitterly interest.  Among them:

The top 5 countries in terms of Twitter accounts are the U.S., Brazil, Japan, U.K. and (no surprise) Indonesia.  The next five are also an eclectic group: India, Mexico, Canada, Spain and the Philippines.

With over 140 million accounts, the U.S. has 27 percent of all Twitter users, and that percentage is declining.   San Francisco, where Twitter is headquartered, is not among the 20 most active (#tweetiest) Twitter cities, but Riyadh (number 10) and Istanbul (number 12) are.

Arabic usage on Twitter continues to grow; it’s now the 6th most tweeted language.

In short, the study may not have been terribly nutritious, but it was tasty… much like Twitter itself.

Implications for businesses?  The world, of course, is only 140 characters away.  And Indonesia’s vast market of  237 million is closer than ever.
