How to Flash a Ubiquiti Bullet, Pico or Nano/Loco with OpenWRT
Author: Michael Vale August 6th 2009
Based on How to configure Ubiquiti Bullet 2 or Nano2/Loco 2 in mesh mode by Salvador Bertenbreiter May 3th 2009
This procedure will replace the default AirOS firmware with the OpenWRT firmware.
Warning: The use of this firmware disables certain device functions, such as LED signals and the Ubiquiti Web interface. In case you want to go back to the AirOS firmware (factory default), please refer to the section “Recovery of Ubiquiti firmware”
Momentarily, this method only can be used with Bullet, Pico, Nano/Loco. Don’t try to use these steps with other Ubiquiti-based devices. Flash OpenWRT firmware for, Bullet, Pico, Nano/Loco (Microsoft Windows users) Starting flash process
Requirements
- A computer running Microsoft Windows (Windows XP, Vista or 7) - Direct Ethernet cable connection between PC and Bullet, Pico or Nano/Loco. - Network settings of PC: IP address: 192.168.1.254 and net mask: 255.255.255.0 - TFTP client on PC (TFTPD32 is recommended) - OpenWRT firmware file. You can download it from here: For Nano2 or Bullet2 devices: http://kamikaze.openwrt.org/8.09.1/atheros/openwrt-atheros-ubnt2-squashfs.bin For Nano5 or Bullet5 devices: http://kamikaze.openwrt.org/8.09.1/atheros/openwrt-atheros-ubnt5-squashfs.bin For Pico2 devices: http://kamikaze.openwrt.org/8.09.1/atheros/openwrt-atheros-ubnt2-pico2-squashfs.bin
Steps
- First of all, disconnect the Ethernet cable from Pico, Bullet2 or Nano/Loco2. - Connect the Ethernet Cable and immediately press the Reset button (near the device’s RJ45 connector) for 10 seconds. - Make sure that device responds to pinging (command: ping 192.168.1.20, by default). If not, please repeat previous steps. - Using the TFTP client, upload the firmware file (extension .bin) to the Bullet2 or Nano/Loco2 IP address (192.168.1.20, by default). If the device doesn’t accept the firmware filename, rename it to “flash_update”. - Signal LEDs will be blinking during firmware upgrade. - Wait for about 7 minutes (Warning: Do not disconnect the Ethernet cable during procedure).
Configuring IP addressl
Once you finish these steps your device will have the OpenWRT firmware loaded. Then point your web browser at 192.168.1.1 and proceed by setting a password for the root (administrative) account.

Ubiquiti AirOS firmware can be downloaded from http://www.ubnt.com/support/airos.php
- First of all, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the device. - Connect the Ethernet Cable and immediately press the Reset button (near the device’s RJ45 connector) for 10 seconds. - Make sure that Bullet2 or Nano/Loco2 responds to pinging (command: ping 192.168.1.20, by default). If not, please repeat previous steps. - Using the TFTP client, upload the firmware file (extension .bin) to the device IP address (192.168.1.20, by default). If it doesn’t accept the firmware filename, rename it to “flash_update”. - Signal LEDs will be blinking during firmware upgrade. - Wait for about 7 minutes (Warning: Do not disconnect the Ethernet cable during procedure). - Now the device should be alive and with the AirOS firmware loaded.
