Sistem Identifikasi Otomatis (Automatic Identification System / AIS) adalah sistem pelacakan otomatis yang digunakan pada kapal dan oleh dinas lalu lintas kapal (VTS) untuk mengidentifikasi dan menemukan kapal dengan menukar data secara elektronik dengan kapal lain di dekatnya dan stasiun Basis AIS. Informasi AIS melengkapi radar laut, yang terus menjadi metode utama penghindaran tabrakan untuk transportasi air. Koordinator lalu lintas kelautan menggunakan AIS dan radar untuk mengelola lalu lintas kapal. Sistem yang dilengkapi AIS di atas kapal menyajikan arah dan jarak kapal di dekatnya dalam format tampilan seperti radar. Tampilan grafis data AIS di atas kapal.
Informasi yang diberikan oleh peralatan AIS, seperti identifikasi, posisi, jalur, dan kecepatan yang unik, dapat ditampilkan di layar atau ECDIS. AIS dimaksudkan untuk membantu petugas pengawas kapal dan mengizinkan pihak berwenang maritim untuk melacak dan memantau pergerakan kapal. AIS mengintegrasikan transceiver VHF standar dengan sistem penentuan posisi seperti penerima LORAN-C atau GPS, dengan sensor navigasi elektronik lainnya, seperti gyrocompass atau indikator belokan. Kapal yang dilengkapi dengan transceiver dan transponder AIS dapat dilacak oleh BTS AIS yang berada di sepanjang garis pantai atau, bila berada di luar jangkauan jaringan terestrial, melalui semakin banyaknya satelit yang dilengkapi receiver khusus AIS.
Frekuensi kerja AIS berada pada 162 MHz.
VHF maritime channels 87B (161.975 MHz) and 88B (162.025 MHz), and use 9.6 kbit/s Gaussian minimum shift keying (GMSK) modulation over 25 kHz channels using the High-level Data Link Control (HDLC) packet protocol.
